What is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood?
Often called “Hagaren” in Japanese, this is the story of two brothers traveling through a world where alchemy exists, trying to regain the bodies they lost. Alchemy follows the principle of “equivalent exchange”: to obtain something, something of equal value must be given up.
The brothers attempted the forbidden act of human transmutation to bring back their deceased mother and paid a terrible price. Their search for the Philosopher’s Stone to recover what they lost eventually draws them into a much larger conspiracy.
Main characters
Edward Elric (Ed): The older brother and protagonist, who became a State Alchemist at a young age. Known as the “Fullmetal Alchemist,” he wears mechanical prosthetics called automail on his missing right arm and left leg.
Alphonse Elric (Al): Ed’s younger brother. After losing his body in human transmutation, his soul was bound to a large suit of armor. Despite his imposing appearance, he is gentle and kind.
Roy Mustang: The “Flame Alchemist,” who uses fire-based alchemy. A key military figure with close ties to the Elric brothers.
Winry Rockbell: A childhood friend of the Elric brothers. She maintains their automail and supports them throughout their journey.
Returning to USJ after 22 years
In spring 2005, USJ hosted the “Fullmetal Alchemist Premiere Tour.” The 2027 event will be the second collaboration, 22 years later. There is no announcement that the new experience will be the same as the 2005 event, so the details of this new collaboration remain to be seen.
What is the anime Daemons of the Shadow Realm?

Daemons of the Shadow Realm (Yomi no Tsugai) is a supernatural fantasy by Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. It follows Yuru, a boy living in a remote mountain village, and his twin sister Asa, as they become caught up in battles involving the village’s secrets and mysterious beings called “Tsugai.”
The story begins with a quiet village life, but an incident forces Yuru to face a world and truths he never knew. The series combines mysteries with battles. Its first anime season aired in spring 2026, and a second season has been confirmed.
Main characters
Yuru: The protagonist, a talented young archer and hunter raised in the remote Higashi Village. He cares deeply for his sister Asa and becomes the master of the village’s former guardian spirits, Sayu-sama.
Asa: Yuru’s twin sister. One of the “twins who divide night and day,” she holds a key to the story’s central mystery.
Ryu Tadara (Dera): A man who helps Yuru and guides him into the world outside the village. He plays a major role in Yuru’s journey.
Gab-chan: A girl who commands a powerful Tsugai named Gabriel. She is one of the central characters involved with Yuru and his allies.
Jin Kagemori: A member of the Kagemori family who commands the Tsugai known as “Cleaner.” He is involved in the story’s mysteries and conflicts.
What are “Tsugai”? Mysterious beings that come in pairs
The beings that give the series its Japanese title, “Tsugai,” generally exist as pairs of two. They take many forms, including humans, animals, and figures resembling supernatural creatures. People who form contracts with Tsugai become their masters and can call on their powers in battle.
Think of them as partners who work in pairs and possess special abilities. Each pair looks different and has distinct powers, so discovering which two beings are paired is part of the fun.
Yuru’s Tsugai: Sayu-sama (Left and Right)
The Tsugai serving Yuru are Sayu-sama, a pair consisting of “Left” (Hidari) and “Right” (Migi). They were originally worshipped in Higashi Village as guardian deities represented by two stone statues.
Left is a combative Tsugai with a female appearance, while Right is a bold, large-built Tsugai with a male appearance. Though their personalities differ, they work together to help Yuru in battle. For a quick introduction, remember: Yuru is the protagonist, and Sayu-sama are his companions.
It will be interesting to see how USJ might portray the Tsugai and their powers. However, how Sayu-sama would appear and what the staging would involve have not yet been announced.
What about attractions, merchandise, and food?
As of November 3, 2026, neither series has announced specific attraction formats, venues, exact event dates, merchandise, limited-time food, or ticket and reservation requirements.
Fans may be curious how the series’ battles and alchemy could become theme park experiences, but no 4-D theater, ride, or walkthrough format has been confirmed. This article will be updated when more information is announced.
Universal Cool Japan 2027 also features The Apothecary Diaries, Sailor Moon, and Detective Conan
In addition to the two Hiromu Arakawa titles, Universal Cool Japan 2027 will feature The Apothecary Diaries, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, and Detective Conan—five series in total.
