GUIDE MAP
USJ guides by purpose
Use Happyell’s specialist pages for detailed, practical information.
Universal Studios Japan (USJ), often simply called “USJ” or “Universal” by visitors in Japan, is a theme park with an enormous range of experiences, including attractions, shows, characters, limited-time events and restaurants.
First-time visitors and people returning after several years often ask: “What time should I arrive?”, “Which ticket should I buy?”, “How do I enter the Mario area?” and “Which attraction should I visit first?”
On this page, the Happyell editor-in-chief, who visits USJ around 50 times a year, explains the essential information to check before your trip. Each subject is covered in greater detail on a specialist page, so this guide focuses on the conclusions and the most important points.
- Buy your Studio Pass in advance
- Install the official USJ app on your smartphone
- Check the crowd forecast and the likely actual opening time for your date
- Decide whether Mario and Donkey Kong are your highest priority
- Choose the first attraction you will visit
How to prepare for a successful first visit to USJ

If you wait until you arrive at the park to plan your day, long waits for popular attractions and the distribution status of area timed-entry tickets may prevent you from experiencing what you wanted.
First, decide on one to three experiences you absolutely do not want to miss, what the people travelling with you will enjoy, and where you would like to eat. Your satisfaction will usually be higher when you set priorities instead of trying to do everything in one day.
Prepare the official app before your visit

The official USJ app shows attraction wait times, show schedules, the park map and eTickets for timed entry. Registering the QR codes for your admission tickets before arrival also makes the steps after entering the park much smoother.
Choose where you will go first
Immediately after opening, many guests head to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD or other popular attractions. The best plan changes depending on whether Mario and Donkey Kong are your top priority, whether you want to ride thrill attractions first, or whether you mainly want to enjoy shows.
Check a first-time visitor itinerary
Our first-time visitor guide includes detailed touring plans for families with children, thrill-ride fans, visitors arriving at around 9:00 a.m. and other situations.
Buy your USJ tickets in advance
To enter USJ, you need a basic admission ticket called a Studio Pass. Studio Pass prices vary by visit date, and dates expected to be busy tend to cost more.
The price does not change according to how early or late you buy it.
However, there is no ticket booth to use after you arrive at USJ.
You need to register and purchase on the official website from your smartphone, or use a service such as Rakuten Travel to buy a USJ ticket.
An Express Pass is suitable for visitors who want to experience many popular attractions in limited time, are visiting on a crowded date, or want guaranteed entry to the Mario area. Eligible attractions and assigned times differ by product, so check the details before purchasing.
Crowd levels and arrival time can determine how much you enjoy the day

Even on the same day of the week, USJ crowd levels change because of school holidays, long weekends, event opening days, limited-time attractions and ticket prices. When you can choose your visit date, check the crowd forecast before fixing your schedule.
USJ may also begin admitting guests earlier than its officially listed opening time. If a popular area or attraction is your priority, check Happyell’s forecast for the actual opening time as well as the official operating hours.
- Mario and Donkey Kong are your top priority: consider arriving early
- You want to experience many popular attractions: queue before opening
- Your priority is a show or parade: work backwards from its performance time
- You will enter in the afternoon: limit your priorities and stay through the evening
If you are visiting today, use the “Today at USJ” section at the top of this page. The following pages explain detailed touring plans by date and crowd trends throughout the year.

Choose USJ attractions for the people travelling with you
USJ has thrill rides, game-style attractions, boat rides, theatres, stage shows and attractions for children. Do not choose only by popularity. Consider fear level, height restrictions, motion sickness, wait times and the preferences of your group.
There is a limit to how many experiences fit into one day. First-time visitors should choose three to five must-do attractions and experience those with long waits immediately after opening or with an Express Pass.
Our specialist guide explains the full attraction list, fear levels, height restrictions, thrill ratings and how to choose rides for children.
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and Donkey Kong Country

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is a highly popular area where you can explore the worlds of Mario and Donkey Kong Country. Experiences include Mario Kart, Yoshi’s Adventure, Mine-Cart Madness, Power-Up Band activities, character photos and area-exclusive food.
On crowded days, an Area Timed Entry Ticket/Standby Entry Ticket or an Area Entry Guarantee is required to enter. Depending on conditions, there may also be periods when you can enter without a timed-entry ticket.
In 2026, Area Timed Entry Tickets/Standby Entry Tickets for SUPER NINTENDO WORLD are issued only through the official app. Register your admission ticket in the app and obtain the timed-entry ticket after entering the park.
If you plan to obtain a free timed-entry ticket, check the crowd level and predicted actual opening time, and consider arriving early. If certainty matters more, an Express Pass or hotel package with guaranteed area entry is another option.
USJ restaurants, lunch and snacks

USJ offers sit-down restaurants, restaurants that accept reservations, cafés and food carts. Limited-time collaboration food and menus that extend the atmosphere of each themed area are also part of the experience.
Restaurants become busy during peak lunch hours. When attractions are your priority, eating slightly early, choosing a late lunch or combining snacks from food carts can make your day easier.
USJ celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026

Universal Studios Japan celebrated its 25th anniversary on March 31, 2026. Under the theme “Discover U!!!”, the park is presenting an anniversary parade, street shows, limited-time attractions, food and merchandise.
The programme changes considerably by season, including spring events, summer soak events, Halloween, Christmas and Universal Cool Japan. Once your date is set, check which shows and limited-time events will be available that day.
Parades and shows run at fixed times independent of attraction waits. When there is a performance you absolutely want to see, check its time first and arrange attractions and meals around it.
How to enjoy USJ with different travel companions
Families with children
Check each child’s height and age and identify the attractions they can use. Yoyakunori reservations in Universal Wonderland, Child Switch and restaurants where it is easy to take a break can help the whole family enjoy the day.
Couples
Combine popular attractions with the evening scenery, shows, limited-time food and photo spots. This creates a more relaxed day than constantly moving between waits. Attractions with night views are also recommended.
Groups of friends
Focus on experiences everyone can share, such as thrill attractions, game-style attractions and parades. When preferences differ, separating only during the busiest wait periods can also work well.
Visiting USJ alone
Attractions with a Single Rider line may offer a shorter wait than the regular queue. Shows, photography, food and seasonal events are also easy to enjoy at your own pace.
Access, hotels and basic park information

Universal Studios Japan is in Konohana Ward, Osaka. The nearest railway station is Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line. From the station, walk through Universal CityWalk Osaka to the park entrance.
For visitors coming from farther away or planning to enter early, staying near USJ makes travel easier. Official Hotels, Alliance Hotels and Associate Hotels differ in distance from the park, breakfast, guestrooms and packages that include tickets.
A hotel close to the park is particularly convenient when you want to enjoy Mario and Donkey Kong early, stay until near closing, or visit with young children.

Frequently asked questions before visiting USJ
What time should I arrive at USJ?
It depends on your priorities and the expected crowd level. If Mario and Donkey Kong or another popular attraction is your highest priority, consider arriving before the predicted actual opening time. When shows and standard attractions are your main goals, arriving very early may not always be necessary.
See our recommended arrival times here.

Do I need a timed-entry ticket for the Mario area?
It depends on crowd conditions. There may be periods when guests can enter without one, but during busy times you need an Area Timed Entry Ticket/Standby Entry Ticket or an Area Entry Guarantee.
Do I need the official USJ app?
Some experiences do not require it, but we strongly recommend downloading it before your visit because it is used for wait times, the map, show schedules and eTickets for timed entry.
Can I buy a ticket on the day?
Same-day purchases may be available, but advance purchase is recommended once your date is decided so you can avoid sellouts and time spent purchasing.
Do I need an Express Pass?
It is not required. It is especially valuable when you want to experience many popular attractions on a busy day, shorten waits, or secure guaranteed entry to the Mario area.
Can I experience every attraction in one day?
Some attractions take a long time, so experiencing everything is difficult. Set priorities and combine attractions with shows and meals.
Can I enjoy USJ on a rainy day?
You can focus on indoor attractions, shows and restaurants. Some outdoor attractions and shows may be suspended or changed because of the weather, so check the official app for the latest operation status.
Can I leave and re-enter the park?
Guests using tickets other than Annual Passes normally cannot re-enter. Re-entry has occasionally been allowed under exceptional circumstances, such as extreme restaurant congestion.
Where are the coin lockers?
There is a large coin-locker area before the security checkpoint.
