□ Renewed: Toei Kyoto Studio Park Evolves into an Interactive Destination—A New Way to Have Fun That Adults Can’t Resist

Kyoto’s popular sightseeing spot, Toei Kyoto Studio Park, has been renewed, evolving from a place you simply watch into a place you actively experience.
The recreated Edo-period streets remain, but the park now offers a wealth of hands-on content in which visitors can take part themselves.
The changes completely transform the traditional image of the studio park, making it such an enjoyable destination that an entire day passes in no time. Here is what makes it special.

◇ The Atmosphere Changes the Moment You Enter

Toei Kyoto Studio Park

As soon as you enter the studio park, an authentic Edo-period townscape unfolds before you.
The detailed buildings and narrow streets feel remarkably realistic, and simply walking around is exciting.
Rather than visiting a typical tourist attraction, it feels more like walking through a movie set!
Because the area is also used as an open set by Toei Kyoto Studio, the atmosphere has been carefully crafted down to the smallest detail.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park immersive experience

Throughout the Edo-style town, actors dressed as townspeople and samurai casually strike up conversations with visitors.

Before I knew it, I had received a kawaraban news sheet, heard local gossip from the townspeople, and gotten dessert recommendations. I was completely immersed in the setting.

I even took a photo with a charming townswoman who said she had “recently learned the word hot.” Every encounter leads to a different experience, which is part of the fun.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park Shinsengumi

I also handed a kendama to a member of the Shinsengumi. After failing spectacularly, he walked away saying, “I’m just clumsy,” and everyone nearby burst out laughing together. Moments like this naturally brought strangers closer.

The park has such a warm atmosphere that even solo visitors never feel lonely. Somehow, despite it being my first visit, it also felt comfortingly nostalgic.

□ Interactive Exhibits That Make You Say, “I’ve Never Done This Before!”

The participatory exhibits and attractions left the strongest impression on me.

Samurai Training Dojo

At the Samurai Training Dojo, visitors can learn the basics of staged sword fighting.
It is especially popular with international visitors and requires a numbered ticket, so I recommend getting one as soon as you enter.
You may have seen a sword-fighting show before, but opportunities to try it yourself are rare!
Many people are probably curious to discover what it actually feels like.

The instructors carefully teach everything from how to hold the sword to the proper mindset.
Support is available in foreign languages, and many international guests were enjoying the experience.
Everyone begins with a smile, but their expressions gradually become serious.
By the end, you may discover yourself swinging a sword with confidence and shouting powerfully.

Kyo-Hana Fortune-Telling

At Kyo-Hana Fortune-Telling, you can have your fortune read with hanafuda cards—or even spin a roulette wheel to learn your luck for the day.
The roulette wheel is not used for betting money; it is simply a fortune-telling tool, so guests of any age can participate.
Instead of merely looking at displays, you repeatedly get the feeling that you are stepping into the world yourself, creating a wonderfully entertaining atmosphere.
Children can join too, so it is especially fun for families and groups to try together.

◇ A New Kind of Experience: Stepping into a Period Drama

One of the most striking aspects of the renewal is that the Edo town itself changes over the course of the day.

360° Real-Time Drama

360° Real-Time Drama” is a new live show in which a story unfolds in real time across the entire village.
But even before the main show begins, many different storylines are already developing throughout the streets.

360° Real-Time Drama

You may hear more from the person who first gave you the kawaraban, encounter someone suspicious while walking, or suddenly witness a fight.
As you freely spend a day in a corner of Kyoto during the Edo period, surrounded by many characters going about their lives, you become part of a larger story in which incidents sometimes erupt. It makes for a wonderfully unusual day.
A major attraction is the sense of immersion—as though you have become a character in a period drama.

□ An Experience Off-Limits to Anyone Under 18!?

The especially popular Cho-Han Dice Game is limited to guests age 18 and older, and you can participate only if you win the lottery.
Step into an authentic gambling den.

Cho-Han Dice Game

At the caller’s cry, players bet their wooden tokens on cho or han, reacting with delight or disappointment as they wholeheartedly enjoy a form of Edo-period entertainment. It has become a major talking point.

The elegant hostess who appears is so beautiful that she commands everyone’s attention the instant she enters.

The moment when a large crowd simultaneously shouts “cho” or “han” and places their bets is tremendously fun. Everyone cheers together and enjoys the game as a group.
The backdrop is truly beautiful and draws you deep into the setting. Before long, you feel as though you have become part of that world yourself.

◇ Fun Even Without Knowing Period Dramas

One thing I especially appreciated was that there was no need to worry, “Will I enjoy this if I don’t know much about period dramas?”
Fans of the genre can certainly appreciate the finer details, but even ordinary sightseers will find the experience highly satisfying.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park
It was easy to understand why there were so many international visitors.
The park has become a place where guests can experience a distinctly Japanese world.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park guided tour

Guided tours reveal secrets behind various movie sets and teach you about the town. They are offered several times a day, so I recommend joining one whenever it fits your schedule.

◇ Interactive Entertainment Adults Can Enjoy

In the past, the studio park focused mainly on the fun of watching sets and shows. Today, it has transformed into interactive entertainment that even adults cannot help wanting to join.
With plenty of features that invite spontaneous reactions, the park has evolved into a destination for a wide range of ages.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park Evangelion

Surprisingly, there is also an attraction where you can experience the world of Evangelion.
Standing 15 meters tall, Evangelion Unit-01 rises with its upper body emerging from a pool of L.C.L.!

Beyond its enormous scale, Kyoto Base is the only place where visitors can actually climb aboard.
The park now offers worlds beyond the movies as well.

□ Photo Spots That Are Almost Too Good

The studio park is far easier to photograph than you might expect.
Not only the streets, but also the sets, performances, and props all share a unified look, so every location has atmosphere.

More than simply looking at the scenery, you feel as though you can become part of the world yourself, making it highly suited to social media.
While filming, I repeatedly thought, “This would look amazing in a video.”

◇ Classic Appeal and Fresh Ideas Side by Side

Toei Kyoto Studio Park
Of course, the classic charm of the studio park is still very much alive.
The realistically recreated streets and period-drama atmosphere remain, while new experiential elements make the space even more engaging.
The combination of nostalgia and novelty gives first-time visitors—and even returning guests—fresh surprises.
The park is highly photogenic, but even stronger is the sense that you are actually taking part in the experience.
Immersive events have become popular recently, and the studio park’s distinctive appeal is the chance to enjoy one within a traditional Japanese setting.

◇ The Renewal Feels Perfectly Up to Date

What struck me during this visit was that the park has not simply preserved an old facility unchanged. It has evolved to match the way people enjoy attractions today.
The attractions and performances go beyond nostalgia, emphasizing:

• immersion
• hands-on experiences
• social-media appeal
• photo- and video-friendly settings

The entire park feels closely aligned with what people find fun today.

◇ A Surprisingly Underrated Kyoto Attraction

Kyoto often brings temples and street food to mind, but the studio park is strongly experience-focused, making it an interesting addition to a sightseeing itinerary.
It is especially recommended for:

• travelers who want a change from standard Kyoto sightseeing
• people who want to take photos and videos
• anyone who wants to step inside a fully realized world

Once you visit, you may find it several times more enjoyable than you expected.
This trip reminded me that Toei Kyoto Studio Park is not a sightseeing spot you merely look at—it is one you enter.
The atmosphere of a period drama combines with contemporary interactive staging, making it thoroughly enjoyable even for adults.
It deserves a place on any Kyoto travel shortlist, and it is well worth experiencing at least once.
