■ What is USJ Mario Area Super Nintendo World

USJ’s new area, Super Nintendo World, is an area where you can experience Mario’s game world all day long.

■ Super Nintendo World Basic Information

The USJ Mario area is named “Super Nintendo World." Donkey Kong Country is also located in the same area.
Before introducing strategies, let’s go over some basic information.

Where is it located?

Super Nintendo World is situated between the Harry Potter Area and Water World.
There is only one entrance and exit, located right next to the entrance of Water World.

A common question is, Can you go directly from the Harry Potter Area to Super Nintendo World since they are adjacent? The answer is no. While the map might suggest you can walk directly from the Harry Potter Area, you cannot.

It takes about a 10-minute walk from the USJ entrance gate to Super Nintendo World.
It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk to Gramacy Park, where shows for the New York Area are held.

You Need a Ticket to Enter the Area

Super Nintendo World isn’t large, so the number of people who can enter at one time is limited.
Therefore, generally only those with a ticket or a guaranteed pass can enter.

*On opening day and on quiet evenings, you may be able to enter without a ticket, but this is recommended for advanced users.

This ticket is not for skipping lines to ride attractions.
It’s a ticket to pass through the entrance of Super Nintendo World.

In 2024, on weekends after 9 AM and on weekdays after 10 AM, only evening time-specific tickets are often available.

Be aware that tickets run out early on weekdays due to many international visitors.

We recommend obtaining tickets through the official app.

If you plan to visit in the afternoon, we recommend purchasing an Express Pass.

How Large is it?

Universal Studios Japan covers an area of 54 hectares (0.54 km²), but
Super Nintendo World is estimated to be about 2 hectares (0.022 km²).

Since it includes both the Mario Area and the Donkey Kong Area, the Mario Area alone is approximately 1 hectare (0.012 km²).
This is roughly equivalent to an area of 100m × 100m.

*This calculation was done based on the map by our company, so it may differ from the officially announced area. If you cite this calculation, please note “Calculated by Hapiel and not officially announced by USJ" and provide a link.
*The area size includes up to the second phase construction (Donkey Kong Area). The Mario Area portion is smaller than this.

Additionally, the Harry Potter Area covers about 3.1 hectares (0.031 km²), so while Super Nintendo World is smaller in area, its three-story structure with mountains and Peach’s Castle might make its total area larger than the Harry Potter Area.
By the way, much of the Harry Potter Area is occupied by Hogwarts Castle and the Forbidden Forest, so the walkable area isn’t that large.

Incidentally, the lagoon at the center of USJ is about 2.2 hectares, so it’s about the same size.

■ Super Nintendo World Strategy

Before you go, here are strategies you should know and strategies that will be helpful within Super Nintendo World.

1. Preparation

USJ Official App

In Super Nintendo World, you can do various things using the USJ official app.

– Obtain and use area tickets
– Number of coins earned through play
– Check obtained stamps and display rankings

Download and set up the app by the day before you go to USJ.

Purchase a Mobile Battery

Frequently using the app can drain your phone’s battery.
Also, taking many photos will reduce it.

There are charging stations within Super Nintendo World, but it’s best to bring a mobile battery if possible.
Nowadays, even affordable ones come with large capacities and can charge multiple smartphones.

2. Entering the Park

Arrive at least 1 hour and 30 minutes before USJ’s opening time.
USJ often opens about 1 to 1 hour and 45 minutes earlier than the time listed on the official website.
If you don’t arrive before opening, you might miss out on ticket distribution or only be able to obtain late evening tickets.

3. Obtaining Tickets

When you enter USJ, you can obtain a Super Nintendo World ticket through the app.

4. Go to the Area Entrance When It’s Time

As the specified time approaches, head to the area entrance.
If you go at the exact time, it may take about 10 minutes to enter during crowded times.

Also, if you arrive at the crew’s ticket verification area before your time, you will be asked to return to the entrance.

5. Restaurant Reservation (Smartphone)

To enter Toad Cafe, you need to make a reservation using your smartphone.
(This is separate from the Super Nintendo World area ticket.)

After entering the area and passing through the pipe, go down the stairs and scan the QR code at the restaurant entrance to make a reservation.
(This can be done by one representative.)

Reservations may require entering 1-3 hours later.
Make your reservation early.

*Before April 2024, tickets were paper-based, but now reservations are done via smartphone.

6. Purchase a Power-Up Band

In Super Nintendo World, if you don’t buy a Power-Up Band, your enjoyment will be significantly reduced.
If you’re going with family, discuss who will choose Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, or Daisy.

They are also sold right after entering the area or before the warp pipe, but they are also available at the Super Nintendo World souvenir shop and the cart after warping, which are less crowded.

7. Rental Mobile Battery

In 2022, a portable rental smartphone battery service started.
When the battery level is low,

You can rent from coin lockers at the entrance or from restrooms within the park,
but you can also rent it in front of the restroom next to Toad Cafe in Super Nintendo World.

It comes with charging cables (for iPhone and Android), so you can rent it if you have a smartphone. (Downloading a dedicated app is required when renting. It’s unclear if minors can rent.)
However, renting from convenience stores is more expensive, so be cautious about long-term use.

New Area Donkey Kong Area [Donkey Kong Country]

In the latter half of 2024, the Donkey Kong Area will be added to Super Nintendo World.
You can enjoy rides and other experiences in the world of Donkey Kong.

Stay with a Accommodation Plan that Includes Area Entry Tickets

If you’re staying at an official hotel, booking through JTB is recommended.

JTB allows you to book accommodations with guaranteed entry tickets for Super Nintendo World.
Additionally, JTB-exclusive services like Early Park Entry, which allows you to enter 15 minutes earlier than general admission, are available. (Requires booking a special plan.)

If you have a guaranteed ticket, you can obtain an area ticket in the morning to enter, then exit the area to enjoy parades or other activities.
In the evening, you can enter with the guaranteed ticket. (You can also enter again with a previously obtained area ticket after entering with the guaranteed ticket.)

Free WiFi Available

Within Super Nintendo World, you can use free high-speed WiFi.
You can view apps and post on social media without using a pocket WiFi.

However, a login screen appears when connecting, which can be a bit of a hassle.
Also, if you don’t communicate for a certain period, you’ll be logged out.

Many Stairs

Since the area is three-dimensional, there are many stairs for moving up and down.
*Baby strollers and wheelchairs can use elevators.

Moving within Bowser Castle and the area primarily involves stairs.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Also, consider storing your luggage in coin lockers outside the area to keep it light.

Manhole Covers at the Area Entrance Are Coins

Super Nintendo World entrance is on the right side of the location in the above photo.
Please pay close attention to the gently sloping ground as you walk.

When you hear a “chariin" sound, there’s a manhole cover at your feet.
It’s actually a manhole cover shaped like a coin.

Nearby, there’s a score display from the Famicom era.
Near the first coin, there’s a “100 points" display.

As you keep moving forward, you’ll find interesting things along the way.

Historical Dates of Super Mario Embedded in the Ground

The release dates of Mario Brothers and Super Mario Brothers,
the opening date of Super Nintendo World (March 2021), and other historical dates of Mario

Mario Kart ~Bowser’s Challenge~

Ride Mario Kart and race alongside Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and others against Bowser and his minions!!

Depending on how you play the race, you can earn points, making it an attraction that can be enjoyed multiple times. Many strong players have experienced it over 100 times during the pre-opening period of about two months.

When you experience it for the first time, you might finish the race while getting used to the game rules or being mesmerized by the world view.
You should experience it at least twice.
Enjoying the game after understanding how to play is also fun.

The attraction is located deep within Bowser Castle.
Proceeding deeper into Bowser Castle, you’ll find Bowser’s study.

The books on the bookshelf convey the world view of Super Mario and look very interesting.

The area where you wait in line for the attraction is inside Bowser Castle, so just looking around can be enjoyable with various discoveries.

Embark on a journey to find three eggs!!

■ Power-Up Band Key Challenge

The Power-Up Band is an essential item if you want to fully enjoy Super Nintendo World.

When you wear this band and hit blocks, you can collect coins, but those without the band won’t even hear the coin sounds.
Being able to jump and collect coins like Mario is one of the joys of Super Nintendo World, so we recommend purchasing it.

There are six types of key challenges you can enjoy while wearing the Power-Up Band.
Clearing three allows you to enjoy the final battle with Bowser Jr.

– Aim! Koopa POW Block Punch
– Spin! Koopa Crank
– Stop! Piranha Plant Alarm Panic
– Align! Dosun Flip Panel
– Collect! Bomb Hei Scatter Puzzle
– Retrieve Golden Mushroom! Bowser Jr. Final Battle

Clearing them allows you to enjoy hard mode.
Conditions like clearing them skillfully grant hidden bonuses, offering varying difficulty levels and secrets like in a game, making it enjoyable multiple times.

Some games can be played by 3-4 people simultaneously, but those without a Power-Up Band cannot participate.
If you’re going with children, it’s recommended that parents also purchase the band so they can enjoy the games together.

Hit Blocks. Find Hidden Characters with Binoculars

Hit question mark blocks and brick blocks to collect coins, or skillfully hit note blocks to play luxurious Super Mario BGM in the park.

With three AR binoculars located in the area, you can walk around watching Mario characters and search for hidden characters.

In addition to the usual play where you hit the lit-up parts of the note blocks in order, you can also take on a secret note block challenge.
If you hit them in a secret order and perform a special rendition, it might be cool.

■ Christmas

From 2023 to the Christmas period of 2024, special decorations will continue as they did in 2022.

■ Greeting Photo Shoots

Mario and Luigi are very popular, so they are often popular spots where you might wait in line for over 20 minutes.

■ Meals Available in the Mario Area

Toad Cafe has the most seating among USJ restaurants.
However, due to its popularity, long waits have led to it becoming reservation-only.

The takeout Yoshi Snack Island can be purchased with a short wait.
It’s also recommended when you’re a bit hungry.

However, since there are few benches nearby, you might end up eating while standing.

Where to Obtain Toad Cafe Tickets

They are distributed in front of the Toad Cafe store.
You cannot obtain them without entering Nintendo World.

■ Express Pass

By purchasing an Express Pass for Mario Kart or Yoshi’s Adventure, you can enter Super Nintendo World without needing a ticket.

■ Mario Goods Shop

Super Nintendo World has two goods shops.

– 1-Up Factory
– Mario Motors

You can also buy goods at USJ’s souvenir shops outside Super Nintendo World, but some goods are only available at “1-Up Factory" and “Mario Motors." If you want to buy core merchandise, be sure to check the Super Nintendo World shops.

You can also purchase candy souvenirs, Mario’s classic headbands, and hats at the USJ entrance goods shop.

Pikmin Hunting

Since it’s Nintendo World and not just Mario World, there are characters from other Nintendo games.
Those are Pikmin.

They are hidden in various places, from easy-to-find spots to very difficult ones, so be sure to look for them.

Super Nintendo World Opening Dates

Originally scheduled to grand open on February 4, 2021 (Thursday), it was postponed and opened on March 18, 2021.
